Summer Campfire by BonesWolbach Summer Campfire by BonesWolbach
Ok this is still a work in progress, I'm still deciding if im going to use this for one of my requests or if im going to put Luna into it instead, or somthing else let me know what you think. I still think that I need to add/change the back mountain area and purple hill infront of that. Let me know what you think I should do. A good amount of it is vectored from SisterHooves Social

Time: 9 hours over the past month
(I'v been way to busy, but requests are very slowly getting done)

I used your background here through *DaringDashie's SVG version (I had to de-blur and de-gradient the sky to avoid banding). Credit is given in the description. And maybe you could put the SVG link in the description, and consider it as a collaboration with *DaringDashie, since the link is already in the comments...

I've used this BG here (with full credit of course :)) thanks.

I've also converted it to an Inkscape SVG, might be useful to you in AI?

I'm glad you were able to make it work, the comic is awesome! :D Just curious how did you end up getting the file from PSD to Inkscape? Did you use Illustrator as a half way program? and thanks for linking the SVG version of the image, it will be really useful in the future :)

Thanks!

I need to go in and have a look at the rest of your backgrounds before my Photoshop demo expires, you've got a great collection of them.

I was thinking maybe you could link the SVG in your description? Only if you want to though, it just might be handy for somepony else :)

Several people have asked how I did this conversion, its a little long and complicated so I've put together a quick DIY guide/explanation. (As an aside, have you ever tried the export paths to Illustrator command in PS? I don't have Illustrator and the AIs I generated wouldn't open in Inkscape.)

Hang on, how did you know that I'd be needing a campsite background round about now?

I almost can't believe I found this, I was about to start creating something similar and then decided to check the VectorClub gallery just on the off chance. I've managed to pull it out of Photoshop and get it into Inkscape without too much harm befalling it (still a few weird errors creeping in but they're all fixable).

The night/firelight is going to make for challenging pony colouring, I was planning to draw a day BG and use an overlay for the whole scene but I'll have to be a bit more creative here.

How do you work with/correct for nighttime colouring? Any tips?

Really awesome work :iconfluttershyyayplz:

Magic :]

And about nighttime colors: I think it's just about adding the layers with darkened actual color and giving it some opacity, main a layer with black color and giving it something about 60%opacity.

Thanks for the nighttime tips, I ended up using a filter are based on the linked file by :iconbrainchildeats: and the matrices worked out by epdtry.

I think that the nighttime scenes are animated with a blue overlay, which is what that filter recreates. My problem was that I couldn't easily use a simple transparency cause this BG is already in night colours. Of course I could've clipped the overlay to each pony but that would've made editing really difficult.

This is so, so ridiculously awesome! I was actually going to ask about your process until I saw you attached your PSD! I love the color-palette - I can't believe these are all -shapes-! Was it done in illustrator and then imported over??

The biggest thing I have found is to keep it simple when I make my own backgrounds. What kind of landscape are you going for so I can get a better idea.

Well all you can see from the windows is a distant landscape or hills then once you start to look to the left the more menacing the hills become eventually becoming very higher dangerous looking mountains, like dragon mountain almost.

Part of the problem could be the progression from hills to the jagged mountains or somthing of that nature. The main problem I have when I work on mountains is getting the colors to look right. Here is a very early WIP from a project I have been working on for a while now. [link] Just to give you an idea of how I lay out the mountains and colors. Another thing that I have found is to add more detailed items closer up, like some trees so when the viewer looks at the background they will see the trees then the mountains so you can make the mountains very simple to show depth of field. hope this helps and if you need more help let me know

A-A-A-AMAZING PIECE. and burning with that! i expected to see this decor vectored and png'd in high resolution, bro. don't change anything, colleague. it's all good... but possibly you should make another version without the fire and the light? |D
by the way, i noticed you flipped it horizontally and added a moon, which is a good touch, mainly the moon.

Thanks, I like the idea of making another version of this without the fire :) Yeah I felt that the sky really needed somthing else and I didn't want to do any clouds, I usually end up flipping most of my background horizontally when I start to make my own changed to them. Usually I change it back but with this one I liked where everything was.
